Queefing is perfectly normal, it is only embarrassing if you have no idea what it is and why it happens hence, we say knowledge is power.
What is a Queef?
Oh my…. did my vagina just fart? Some may call it vaginal fart, vaginal gas or vaginal flatulence also referred to as a queef. Queefing is the release of odorless air that has been trapped in the vagina. Firstly, it is definitely not a fart because a fart is a gas that comes from your butt and typically has an odor. Queef and a fart sound the same but they are not the same thing. A queef has no smell and it has nothing to do with your diet or what you had on your plate. You can’t hold a queef just as you can hold your fart. Fart-like sound during sex can be awkward but queefing is another natural body function that comes with having a vagina.
What causes queefing?
- Queefing can happen when doing certain yoga poses, exercise whereby stretching of vaginal opening occurs allowing small air to be pushed in.
- It can be due to pregnancy because the pelvic floor muscles are weakened.
- it can happen during a pelvic exam when the doctor inserts or removes the speculum.
- it can happen when inserting a tampon
- you can queef more after childbirth or losing too much weight because of the sagging skin (pelvic walls may no longer be tight enough)
- sexual intercourse
Queefing during sex
During sex, queefing can happen when the penis goes in and out of the vagina. Air can be easily trapped during this thrusting movement. It can also happen with the use of sex toys, fingers as well as oral sex. Some women may experience louder queefs with the use of condoms, during certain sex positions or when changing position, or with rough sex. Positions that allow air to go into the vagina will cause more queefs like women on top whereby your legs will open more. Other positions where the pelvis is tilted forward like doggy style and many other positions where your butt might be lifted.
Can queefing be prevented?
When you become cautious of how to change positions during the dance in order to avoid queefing, it means you are not completely in the game so you are not really having fun. We are well aware of how the mental state can be a game-changer in the wrong direction. Your partner should be your friend and your bedroom staff should be all fun and games without any awkwardness to it.
The stigma around it is due to a lack of understanding and it is just like a loud growling stomach. It is generally never a cause for concern. There are very rare cases where it calls for concern and it is when it comes with a foul smell or discharge or pain, if this happens then run to the doctor as it indicates vaginal infections.
In concluding
A queef is a vaginal flatulence, it is an involuntary, absolutely normal bodily function, and nothing to be embarrassed about. You will at some point queef as it is very common because it is something that happens to everyone with a vagina. It’s just trapped air that is being pushed out of the vagina. Educate your partner about it if they don’t understand it so both of you can be more comfortable about it when it happens. Just focus on the task at hand!!
