10 TRIED AND TESTED NATURAL WAYS TO GET RID OF PIGMENTATION
Tired and frustrated by hyperpigmentation? Call it hyperpigmentation, melasma, chloasma or the mask of the pregnancy, it’s a bad skin and a nightmare for every woman. There are lots of options to help you clear problematic areas without buying expensive products. In this article, we discuss the tried and tested natural ways to get rid of pigmentation.
Pigmentation is a very stubborn skin discoloration. It affects the forehead, cheeks, nose as well as the upper lip area. It mostly affects the light skin and in the midst of trying to get rid of it, you can never go right without the use of sunscreen. Sun exposure or hot environments can make it worse so choose a sunscreen with an SPF according to how you are exposed to the sun. Look into the following and try some DIY that can be helpful
1. Lemon
Lemon is very good in lightening the skin and it normally gives faster results. It is considered one of the best ingredient to help you fight this nightmare. You can replace your toner and use lemon juice. Squeeze the lemon and keep it in a small container and use it as a toner after cleansing your face, then apply your moisturizer followed by sunscreen. Please note that if you are too exposed to the sun the lemon will worsen the situation, in this instance rather use it at night before bed or use higher SPF sunscreen throughout the day. I normally see results when squeezing the lemon itself rather than buying the bottled lemon juice from retailers. The next is honey, the two mostly works great together.
2. Honey
It is also considered the number one skin solution for fighting a lot of skin conditions. Heat a small amount of honey, let it cool and apply to the affected area when it is warm. Be careful not to heat it too much because it will clamp up and you will not be able to use it. You can use it warm alone or you can do some mixtures, when you mix it then you need not warm it first.
Honey mixture: honey with lemon & add a tablespoon of sugar. Apply the mixture on the skin and rub with another half of lemon gently for 25min.
Results are almost instant even on a very dark pigmentation. It works as an exfoliator/scrub as well so do not do this every day. Try the following bleaching mask for a week, every day preferably after work: mix lemon juice, honey, rice flour, and almond oil. Make a paste and apply on the affected area for about 20min and wash off with lukewarm water. Alternatively for 3 consecutive days: for 20min apply a paste of honey, tomato pulp, rice flour with either raw milk or rose water.
3. Potato
It is as simple as just washing a potato with peels and blend it. Squeeze the juice out. Place it under hot water, the steam can make a nice paste. Apply it on the affected areas. Meanwhile, leave it for 20 minutes and after that, it dries out then rinse with lukewarm water. You can keep the potato juice in the fridge for up to two weeks and use it daily. Potatoes can also be used in replacing the lemon when preparing any of the pastes mentioned in the article, they are easily accessible.
4. Bicarbonate of soda (Baking soda)
Baking soda can be very harsh yet very effective so take precautions when using it not to damage your skin. Mix with water and lemon and only apply to discolored areas. Be careful you don’t burn and scar your face.
5. Turmeric
Personally I love spices with the use of lemon, they work magic on my skin. The only issue with turmeric is that it will leave your clothes or hands stained. If you leave it for long on your face it will leave your skin looking yellow. Avoid using it before bed as it will leave bad stains on your pillows and sheets. You can make a paste of turmeric by mixing with that potato juice or tomato juice.
6. Coconut oil
Coconut oil has many great effects on the skin and there are more ways to use it to benefit from its effect. Try these mixtures: a tablespoon of coconut oil with 10 drops of lemon juice. After a long day at work massage the mixture for at least a minimum of 10min. Leave it overnight and wash it off with lukewarm water the following morning.
Or mix a tablespoon of honey with a tablespoon of coconut oil and add gram flour (found in Indian spice shops) to make a smooth paste. Apply to affected areas for 20 min then wash it off with your cleanser and follow your normal face routine prep.
7. Tomato
Tomatoes are good in reviving dull skin, treating acne, skin inflammation tightens pores, soothe sunburn and removes excess oil on the skin. It can be further argued that tomatoes are one of 10 tried and tested natural ways to get rid of pigmentation. Mix cucumber and tomato juice and apply daily to get great results. Keep the mixture in the fridge and use it as a toner whenever you come from harsh sunny outdoors so to reduce the effects of sunburn. Or cut a tomato in half and rub in on your face not only will these tighten your pores but it will also get rid of blackheads. You will have a glowing young-looking skin.
8. Chana Flour
Chana flour is the name mostly used or known in our local Indian shops and that’s where you can find it. Very light yellow or pale in color, almost cream flour mostly known as Gram/Besan flour. You can use it with half the tomato, Mix a tablespoon of some gram flour with the tomato juice before rubbing it on the face.
9. Sandalwood Powder
Also found in local Indian spice shops and a bit expensive. Mix sandalwood powder and gram/chana flour add lemon juice to make a thick paste and apply it to the discolored areas. Alternatively, you can substitute lemon juice with rose water. Acts as an acne fighter, reduce oiliness and lightens dark spots. Add turmeric to the mixture. Should you not have a lemon you can replace it with milk. For best results always try to use lemon as it has a stronger effect on removing pigmentation. 20minutes tops and wash off with lukewarm water. Or simply mix it with water. Sandalwood Powder can leave the same but lighter staining effects as turmeric on your clothes
10. Aloe Vera Gel
Extract and apply the aloe Vera juice on the face. It soothes and revives the skin while treating all kinds of skin conditions.
Before starting with any of the above, start the process with a sugar scrub (DIY cheap Exfoliator) 1tbs of sugar, honey and lemon juice. Massage it using half the lemon gently for 2-3min then rinse off with warm water. The instant change will amaze you.
Face pack to try with the above mentioned
- 1Tbs of sandalwood powder Pinch of turmeric
- 2Tbs of potato juice, mix the ingredients
- Apply on the discolored part of the face for 20min and wash off with lukewarm water.
- Try the mixture twice a week.
Never use hot water it damages the skin, rather use a cold one. Hot water does not only damage the skin on your face but it damages the whole skin if you use it for a bath or shower. If you love hot water please try to slowly switch to lukewarm water for your entire body.
TIP: BE PATIENT AND STOP STRESSING. I have witnessed how stressing aggravates the problem.
